Welcome to the Community Media Training Organisation's Women in Community Media Project! The issue of women's representation in the media has been researched widely- much more widely that the issue of women's employment in the media. In the CMTO office, women outnumber men, with all three fulltime staff being women. It's as simple as that! Or is it?
We first started conceiving this project when we were putting together some information about the key organisations in the community media sector. We were looking at the makeup of both boards, managers and staff of these organisations as part of our research about the community media industry. We were really surprised at some of the initial findings- for example, Kath Letch (CBAA) and Nicola Joseph (CMTO)- were the only two female CEOs of national community broadcasting sector organisations. Unfortunately, Kath has recently resigned so we are down to one female CEO. More on that later...
The women in Coommunity Meida Project is designed to support women in community media management along with women who are tyring to get into management either at ther stations or at the wider levele of a state or national committee. All of the women will be mentored and given a small budget to run a women's project at their station or in their community.
