Steph Hughes
Girls to the Mic Graphic Designer

I'm Steph and this project is a combination of about a thousand things I love. As well as retching at the patriarchy, I enjoy drawing a hell of a lot, making songs with Dick Diver and Boomgates, and working on digital radio as well. I also have the largest recorded baby head in Wangaratta.

When was the first time you remember identifying yourself as a feminist?
I think as soon as I realised I was a girl,  which amongst other things meant I had to convince certain people a little more that I was indeed capable AND interested (!SHOCK!) in doing things boys' did (Grade Prep football team comes to mind, grr).
I think the rage punctuates a little more every time some stooge comments at my band's shows
"That’s so nice  you’re carrying your boyfriend’s gear off stage for him!"
... or "Blah blah blah CHICK DRUMMAAAA...blah blah blah, *unsolicited comment about appearance and or skill level*  and then inevitably some boring discussion on their thoughts about ‘the music industry’ and which Kid Rock album is their favourite.

And there so many more reasons!
Girls to the Mic is a joint initiative of the Digital Radio Project and Community Radio Network at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia
