When was the first time you remember identifying yourself as a feminist?
I grew up surrounded with boys. I had older brothers and my parents' friends all seemed to have sons, so summer holidays were often spent 'keeping up'. I learnt fast how to defend myself, how to play rough and how to run quick. What took longer was to learn how to stand up for myself, not by the measures of my brother or any of his friends, but as a woman. Learning how to appreciate myself as a woman, and stand up for other women in front of boys was probably the first step towards recognizing myself as a feminist, and being totally okay with that.
Girls to the Mic is a joint initiative of the Digital Radio Project and Community Radio Network at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia
